This week the workshop looked at examples of ‘concrete poetry’ from the work of Billy childish that is currently on display upstairs in the gallery. Taking the way that Childish often arranges text on a page to create a visual form or the way that he uses fonts and text shapes/sizes to change the meaning of a poem the workshop made a series of poems inspired by photographs of a journey that they had taken the week before.
Other examples of visually interesting poetry that we looked at for reference was ee cummings, the drawings and maps in Dante’s ‘Inferno’, the collage placed next to text in poetry books by the poet/musician Patti Smith….
We made poems initially from random words cut from different word sheets and created new poems/phrases and then working in pairs the workshop produced rough ideas leading to a final piece of work/outcome: a poster inspired by the photos taken the previous week.

We were a larger group this week and made work both individually and in pairs. In the upstairs Gallery where Billy childish’s music can be heard and record covers seen we drew to the rhythm of the songs and made our own interpretations. Later in the workshop we considered our own individual tastes and characteristics and made a mood board that reflected us or a character/personality that we created. The aim was to end up with a symbol. Working in pairs we made a final piece (a symbol) inspired by the way that Billy Childish as opposed to signing work with his name , paints on a symbol to his canvasses instead (his personal symbol a hangman referring to ideas of starting over from pagan times and his character that he created for himself he sometimes calls ‘The Son of art’).
